Anemia Treatment

Whenever possible, the underlying cause dictates the anemia treatment most appropriate.   Also, it depends on the severity of the anemia as well.

One form of anemia treatment targets iron deficiency.   Iron deficiency is uncommon in adults who aren't menstruating.   Therefore, if iron deficiency is a diagnosis, the anemia treatment will incorporate some form of iron supplement.   To round out this form of anemia treatment, the source of the iron loss will be investigated.   Sometimes anemia treatments incorporate Vitamin C which can help the body absorb iron.

Pernicious anemia is caused by a low Vitamin B12 and lack of folate. This anemia treatment will introduce other forms of vitamin supplements, which include those missing from the persons' diet.

Anemia Treatment

In instances where the anemia is secondary to a chronic disease or to a treatment regime, as in the case of chemotherapy, erythropoietin and other red blood cell precursors are considered as an appropriate anemia treatment.

When the patient's anemia stems from massive one time or on-going blood loss, anemia treatment would involve blood transfusions.   These anemia treatments would occur a number of times in a short period though over a long period, the underlying cause would be checked.   While the original cause is being sought, this is an effective anemia treatment because it temporarily restores the body's capability to transport oxygen to the tissues.   

Chronic anemia in young children affects their normal development and can result in behavioural disturbances.   For this reason causes are aggressively searched and anemia treatments are aggressively prescribed.   Preventing impaired neurological development in infants is another benefit of anemia treatments.
