This is one of the more common blood disorders, it will occur when the level of healthy red blood cells (RBCs) in the body becomes too low. As a result, your blood is low on red blood cells to carry oxygen to carry oxygen to your tissues, which leaves you tired. Some inherited anemias, for instance, sickle cell anemia, can be serious enough to be life-threatening. Losing lots of blood rapidly results in acute, severe anemia and can be fatal.
Anemia is able to be caused by numerous things, but three main bodily mechanisms that will produce it are: blood loss, excessive destruction of RBCs and inadequate production of RBCs.
In most people with chronic kidney disease, anemia development is almost always observed. This occurs because the diseased kidneys no longer make enough of a hormone called erythropoietin (referred to as EPO). This hormone is what tells the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. Chronic Kidney Anemia may occur even with moderate loss of kidney function. Studies have shown that chronic kidney disease patients do better overall when anemia is treated.
Patients who suffer from chronic kidney anemia are treated with medications to increase red blood cell production, which is measured by an increase in hemoglobin levels. An example is epoetin alfa, which is almost identical to the natural hormone, erythropoietin, made by the kidneys. A newer medication called darbepoetin alfa works in the same way as the natural hormone but lasts longer in the body and may be given less often and is preferable in chronic kidney anemia. For chronic kidney anemia patients, the goal of anemia treatment is to reach and maintain a hemoglobin level of at least 11 to 12.
If a patient has chronic kidney anemia and is receiving a medication to increase the red blood cell production, the doctor will check to make sure there are enough stores of iron in the body. Without enough iron in the body, the drug will not work as effectively. Two tests called TSAT and ferritin, carried out in patients suffering from chronic kidney anemia can show if the body has enough iron. The TSAT should be at least 20 percent and the ferritin should be at least 100.
