It is estimated from the available statistics on sickle cell anemia that 1 out of every 400 African Americans has sickle cell and that Sickle Cell anemia affects 8 out of 100,000 people.

Estimated 1 per 1,000 Hispanic Americans are affected by sickle cell disease in the US while the Prevalance Rate is approximately 1 in 1,000 or 0.10% or 272,000 people in the whole of the USA. However, these figures are only illustrative and may change with time. Annual Incidence of Sickle Cell Anemia is 1 per 500 African American births and 1 per 1,000-1,400 Hispanic-American births while most cases occur in those with African ancestors in America.

4. A Statistical Brief by Claudia A. Steiner, M.D., M.P.H. and Jeffery L. Miller, M.D was presented in December 2006 and analyzes data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) on nationwide hospitalizations for sickle cell disease from 1994 through 2004. The sickle cell anemia statistics thrown up by this study show that more women (53 %) than men (47%) fall prey to this disease. The statistics also show that people in the age group 18-44 (66%), living in large metros (69.6%) and with low median income of between $0 to $ 35,999 (54.9 %) are the most affected by sickle cell anemia. The sickle cell anemia statistics also show that 31 % of patients admitted to US hospitals have undergone blood transfusions, 29% were admitted as a result of infections and then diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. Statistics also hold pulmonary infections responsible for 27 % of the hospitalizations.
